Charles Leclerc Lost a US GP From Pole, Then Won the Next One

Charles Leclerc has started seven United States Grand Prix races and the two most recent tell the whole story: a pole that ended in disqualification, then a win from the second row a year later.

Seven starts, one win, three podiums and 80 points. Only one of those seven produced nothing on merit.

Sauber, then six years of Ferrari near-misses

The 2018 debut was for Sauber and ended in collision damage from ninth on the grid. Everything since has been with Ferrari.

Fourth in 2019 and fourth again in 2021, both from fourth on the grid, were solid rather than memorable. The 2019 result came with the fastest lap attached, which is where the extra point in that row comes from.

Can Ferrari win a championship for the first time since 2008?

Third in 2022 was his first podium here, and it came from twelfth on the grid, the deepest recovery of his Austin career. Then 2023, which he would want back: pole position on Saturday, and a disqualification after the race for excessive plank wear that wiped out a sixth-place finish.

2024 answered it. He qualified fourth, won the race and took 25 points, Ferrari's first win at the Circuit of the Americas since 2018. Third place in 2025 from third on the grid followed.

A record that has only gone one way

Read the last four years in order and it climbs: third, disqualified, first, third. Austin has become one of the more reliable circuits on his calendar, which is not something that can be said of Baku, where four poles have produced no win at all.

He returns on 25 October in the SF-26 as the only Ferrari driver to have won here in the last seven years. On a circuit where he has now finished on the podium three times in four visits, that is a reasonable place to start.
