Gabriel Bortoleto Has Been One Place From a Baku Point and No Closer

Gabriel Bortoleto has started two Azerbaijan Grand Prix races and finished both of them without scoring. The closest he came was eleventh, which is the most frustrating position on the sheet.

Two starts, no points, a best finish of eleventh. Neither weekend went wrong, and neither one paid.

Eleventh, then fifteenth, and no retirements either way

2025 was the near miss. Thirteenth on the grid for Sauber, eleventh at the flag, first car outside the points at a circuit where getting that far up the order from thirteenth is already a decent afternoon. One place, and the record would read very differently.

It was not an isolated result in that season either. He scored at the Hungarian Grand Prix and several others that year, so Baku was one of the circuits where the car was competitive and the points still did not arrive.

2026 with Audi was a harder weekend from the start. Seventeenth on the grid left too much to do, and fifteenth at the flag was as far as it went, even on a day when seven cars retired ahead of him.

The grid slot has gone the wrong way

No win, no podium, no pole and no fastest lap, and a points column that still reads zero. What the record does have is two finishes from two at a circuit that has retired forty one cars since 2017, which is not a given for a driver this early in a career.

The concern is Saturday rather than Sunday. Thirteenth became eleventh and seventeenth became fifteenth, so he gained two places both times. At Azerbaijan that is roughly what the circuit allows, which means the points will have to come from qualifying.
