About Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit
Kyalami, near Johannesburg, hosted the South African Grand Prix from 1967 to 1985 and again in 1992 and 1993. Sitting around 1,500 metres above sea level, it cost engines significant power, and its long main straight combined with fast sweeping corners produced consistently good racing.
The circuit was substantially rebuilt in 1987, reversing much of the layout and shortening the lap. That version hosted the final two Grands Prix before South Africa left the calendar.
Kyalami's Formula 1 history includes the 1977 race, in which marshal Frederick Jansen van Vuuren and driver Tom Pryce were both killed in the same accident on the main straight.
