About Circuit Zandvoort

Zandvoort held Dutch Grands Prix from 1952 to 1985, disappeared from the calendar for 35 years, and returned in 2021 with a layout rebuilt specifically to make modern Formula 1 cars race. Cut into the dunes on the North Sea coast, it is narrow, undulating and unusually short on run-off by contemporary standards.

Its distinguishing feature is banking. Turn three and the final corner, Arie Luyendyk, are both banked — the latter at 18 degrees, the steepest corner in Formula 1. The banked final turn allows cars to run side by side and carry more speed onto the start-finish straight, which was the explicit purpose of the redesign.

The seaside location brings two complications. Sand blows onto the circuit and reduces grip off-line, and the wind coming off the North Sea changes direction through the day, altering braking points on a lap that already offers very little margin.

Notable facts

  • The banked final corner, Arie Luyendyk, is inclined at 18 degrees — the steepest corner in Formula 1.
  • Returned to the calendar in 2021 after a 35-year absence, the longest gap for any circuit that has come back.
  • Max Verstappen won the first three Dutch Grands Prix after the circuit's return.
  • Wind-blown sand from the surrounding dunes measurably reduces grip off the racing line.
