With 11 rounds concluded in the 2026 season, we have entered the summer break. While the regulations require the teams to take an operational break during this time, the team bosses and drivers will be busy preparing for the silly season.
In a sport like Formula 1, no driver is safe. For context, we have seen 45 different drivers on the F1 grid in the last 10 years. No matter what, drivers in F1 are always on the move to secure their future in the sport.

Out of 22 drivers in F1, there are 11 current drivers who will be out of contract after the 2026 season. A few notable drivers being Isack Hadjar, Fernando Alonso, and Carlos Sainz. The full list is shown below.
| S.no | Driver | 2026 team |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Hadjar | Red Bull |
| 2 | Colapinto | Alpine |
| 3 | Lindblad | Racing Bulls |
| 4 | Lawson | Racing Bulls |
| 5 | Bortoleto | Audi |
| 6 | Hülkenberg | Audi |
| 7 | Sainz | Williams |
| 8 | Bearman | Haas |
| 9 | Ocon | Haas |
| 10 | Stroll | Aston Martin |
| 11 | Alonso | Aston Martin |
Isack Hadjar has been performing well with Red Bull this season. So there are high chances that he will re-sign with the Austrian team for the 2026 season. With Alonso, there are still a few question marks. We know that Aston Martin have offered him a open contract. So the choice is up to the Spaniard.
There are a lot of questions concerning Carlos Sainz Jr. Before the start of the 2026 season, Sainz expected Williams to deliver a strong car. However, the team has failed to deliver. There have been rumours suggesting that Carlos could move to Audi. His decision will be based on how Williams pull themselves back up from this hole.
Both the Racing Bulls drivers are more likely to retain their seats. The same is likely for the Audi drivers, unless Carlos Sainz is brought into the mix. Oliver Bearman has been impressing everyone in the paddock so far. So Haas will want to retain him for the time being. Ocon on the other hand has been getting outperformed by his much younger teammate. His seat is most certainly at risk.
Aston Martin driver Lance Stroll is most likely to be retained by the team. If Alonso chooses to retire, the team would need to find someone to fill that gap. There are options in Carlos Sainz, Esteban Ocon or the team could choose to go to one of the Formula 2 drivers.
The wild cards of the 2026 F1 silly season
Apart from the drivers who do not have a contract for the 2027 season, there are two drivers who could be looking to get out of their current contracts. People from Max Verstappen's camp have been giving out hints that the 4-time champ may be looking to jump ship.
There is a clause in Verstappen's contract that allows him to leave the team if he is lower than 2nd in the Championship standings by the summer break. Given that he is currently 6th in the standings, it does give him the option. But the question is whether he will activate that clause or not.

Verstappen has been a Red Bull driver since almost starting his racing career, it's hard to imagine him in any other team.
There have been rumours of a potential driver swap between Red Bull and McLaren involving Verstappen and Piastri. There have been whispers that suggest the Australian driver is not happy with how McLaren have been conducting team orders on track. So this could be a interesting move if it happens.
