Kimi Antonelli's rise has been so fast that even people used to watching junior racing talent felt slightly dizzy watching it happen. Growing up in Bologna, in the heart of Italian motorsport country, he was karting against — and regularly beating — drivers several years older than him, catching Mercedes's attention as a young teenager. Mercedes signed him to their junior driver programme early and built his development around him with real patience, moving him through Formula 4, Formula Regional and Formula 2 while deliberately not rushing the final step, even as the hype around him grew louder every season.

That final step came in dramatic fashion. When Lewis Hamilton announced his departure from Mercedes for Ferrari, the team needed a driver ready to sit alongside George Russell in one of the most scrutinised seats in the sport — and rather than bring in an experienced veteran, Mercedes bet everything on Antonelli, promoting him straight into a race seat at just eighteen years old with barely a season of Formula 2 experience behind him. It was an enormous gamble for a team that doesn't usually gamble.

It paid off almost immediately. Antonelli didn't arrive tentative or overwhelmed the way most teenage rookies do — he arrived fast, confident and remarkably composed under pressure for someone who'd barely finished his junior single-seater apprenticeship. Podiums came quickly, and then wins followed sooner than almost anyone predicted, a rookie going toe-to-toe with drivers who'd been racing in F1 since before he started karting. Mercedes fans who'd spent years worrying about life after Hamilton found themselves with a genuine title contender on their hands far sooner than the team's own development plan had probably projected.

What makes Antonelli particularly compelling is how normal he still seems despite all of it — still visibly a teenager in interviews, still clearly a little amazed by his own results some weekends, while somehow driving with the ice-cool precision of a much more experienced racer once the visor comes down. He's benefited enormously from having Russell as a team-mate rather than a rival to be intimidated by; the two have pushed each other hard while Mercedes has stayed remarkably drama-free compared to some of the sport's more combustible team-mate pairings.

He's still only a couple of seasons into his F1 career, but the trajectory is unmistakable: wins, poles and podiums accumulating at a rate that puts him firmly in title conversations most drivers don't reach until their late twenties. Barring a serious change in form, Antonelli looks less like a promising rookie and more like the driver Mercedes will be building their next era of dominance around — a bet that's already looking like one of the smartest driver decisions of the decade.
