About Fair Park
The Dallas Grand Prix was held once, in July 1984, on a temporary circuit through Fair Park. It is remembered chiefly for the conditions and for the state of the track.
Ambient temperatures reached around 40°C and track temperatures far higher, and the newly laid surface began to break up during practice. By race day large sections had disintegrated, throwing debris and narrowing the usable line to a single groove between the walls.
Keke Rosberg won, using a water-cooled skull cap to cope with the heat. Nigel Mansell, having stopped with a failed gearbox on the final lap, attempted to push his car across the line and collapsed from heat exhaustion.
