Indianapolis Motor Speedway

Indianapolis Motor Speedway has counted towards the Formula 1 World Championship in two entirely separate eras, on two entirely different circuits. From 1950 to 1960 the Indianapolis 500 awarded World Championship points, though almost no European Grand Prix regulars entered it and the two fields barely overlapped.

The United States Grand Prix then ran here from 2000 to 2007 on an infield road course that used the Speedway's main straight and turn one banking in the opposite direction to the oval. That combination — a banked, flat-out final corner leading onto a long straight — was unlike anything else in Formula 1 at the time.

Its modern history is dominated by the 2005 race, when tyre failures in the banked corner during practice led all fourteen Michelin runners to withdraw after the formation lap, leaving six cars to contest the Grand Prix.
