Detroit Street Circuit

Detroit hosted the United States Grand Prix from 1982 to 1988 on a street circuit through the downtown Renaissance Center area. It was, by common consent, one of the least liked venues Formula 1 has used.

The problem was the surface. Detroit's streets were concrete rather than asphalt, and the joints between slabs made the circuit brutally bumpy. Combined with tight corners, close walls and poor grip, it produced high attrition — the 1984 race saw only five cars classified as running at the finish.

Ayrton Senna won the last three Detroit Grands Prix, a run that helped establish his reputation on street circuits before Formula 1 left for Phoenix in 1989.
