Over the last couple of years, we have seen multiple young F1 drivers enter the sport and make a name for themselves. The most notable being Mercedes driver, Kimi Antonelli, who at just 19 years old, is leading the 2026 World Championship. This sudden surge in talented young drivers has brought more importance to driver scouts. Now, the scout responsible for discovering Kimi Antonelli has been poached by Red Bull Racing.
For a long time, Red Bull had one of the best junior programmes, run by Helmut Marko. However, since Marko left the team last year, Red Bull has been without a man in charge of the junior programme. Now, the team have poached Mercedes driver scout, Gwen Lagrue. He will responsible for bringing young drivers into Red Bull's junior programme from 2027.
Mercedes wrote on social media: "Thank you Gwen. It’s been a great ride together. Together, we've developed many young drivers, including our current F1 drivers George and Kimi, and you've made a fantastic contribution.
"We have built a true successor to the original Mercedes-Benz junior team, and you leave in place a talented group to carry on this work.
"Professional relationships may come to an end, but we will always remain friends, with a shared mindset. We wish you well for your next challenge."
Given how motorsports has grown in the last decade, more young drivers have access to motorsports than ever before. This gives scouts a demanding job to identify the top talent. In order to be sucessful in this sport, kids usualy start racing at a very young age. Kimi Antonelli was brought into the Mercedes family at the age of 11, by which time, he had already been racing for 4 years.
It will be interesting to see how these scouts attract talent from all over the world.
