With half of the 2026 season completed, the time has come for teams to start thinking about their driver line-ups for next year. For Mercedes, it seems likely that they will retain the same driver line-up for next year. However, there are some questions concerning George Russell.
The 2026 season opener saw George Russell take the top step of the podium after dominating the Australian GP. But since then, most of the season has been dominated by his 19-year-old teammate, Kimi Antonelli. This has raised questions on whether Russell is the right driver to pair with the young Italian.
George Russell confident that he will remain at Mercedes
Ahead of the Hungarian GP, George Russell stated that he is 100% sure that he will be racing with Mercedes next year.
"No announcement this weekend, but I'll be racing here next year. One hundred per cent. It hasn't even been discussed (with Toto Wolff). We don't need to discuss it. It's not even a question mark. I don't want to go into any more detail, but I will be here next year and that's the fact of it." ↗︎Said George Russell.
Kimi Antonelli vs George Russell
While this fact may be true, there are questions on whether the British driver will be at the team in the long run. When Mercedes brought in Russell to replace Bottas in 2022, he was supposed to be a long-term project for Mercedes. But now, things seems to have changed with Kimi Antonelli coming into the picture.
In just his 2nd season in Formula 1, Antonelli has managed to take the lead in the Championship. After just 12 races, he is 50 points ahead of Lewis Hamilton in 2nd, and 59 points ahead of his teammate. If Kimi keeps this up next year, Toto Wolff will have to start considering where and how Russell fits in the team.
The other scenario where Russell could lose his seat
After the Hungarian GP, Toto Wolff gave us a scenario where he could take out one of his drivers. When asked if he could see a scenario such as 2016 in the near future, Wolff said:
"I will not allow it. That's never going to happen to me again. That's never going to happen to the team again. Simple. I'm just taking a driver out if he does that."
During the 2016 F1 season, Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg, drivers for Mercedes, were engaged in a tense battle for the Championship. But this battle became extremely toxic for the team. Both Hamilton and Rosberg kept pushing each other beyond the limit, often leading to DNFs for one or both of the drivers.
This is a scenario Mercedes doesn't want to see again with his drivers. Given how Kimi is outperforming George at the moment, there could be a point where Russell starts to get more desperate to beat his teammate, leading to risky moves to overtake. If something like this happens, Toto will most likely look towards replacing one of his drivers.
