The Story

Lance Stroll's Formula 1 career has always carried an obvious asterisk attached to it — his father, Lawrence Stroll, is a billionaire businessman who has owned or backed several of the teams his son has driven for — and it's a storyline Lance has had to race against as much as any rival on the grid. Born in Montreal, Canada, he came up through karting and junior single-seaters with genuine underlying talent, winning the European Formula 3 championship in 2016, a title that stands on its own merits regardless of what came afterward.

He made his Formula 1 debut with Williams in 2017, becoming, at the time, one of the youngest points scorers in the sport's history and delivering a genuinely surprising podium finish in only his third Grand Prix weekend in wet conditions in Azerbaijan — the kind of result that suggested real ability beneath the inevitable scrutiny over his backing. From 2019 he moved to what was then Racing Point, a team his father had recently taken ownership of, before it was rebranded entirely as Aston Martin, a project built with serious ambition and investment specifically to return one of motorsport's most famous names to the front of the grid.

Stroll's own results across those years have been a mixed picture, shaped heavily by the competitiveness of the car underneath him in any given season. When Aston Martin has produced a genuinely strong package, he's delivered podium finishes and solid points hauls that stand up against most of the midfield; in tougher seasons, the scrutiny over his seat has intensified, with plenty of pundits and fans questioning whether he'd hold the drive at all without his family's ownership of the team. It's a criticism Stroll has had to live with publicly for his entire career in a way almost no other driver on the grid faces in quite the same way.

What's often underappreciated in that noise is his underlying consistency: across a genuinely turbulent decade for the team he drives for — rebrands, ownership changes, wildly fluctuating competitiveness — Stroll has remained a steady, largely mistake-free points contributor whenever the car has allowed it, racing alongside a string of more heralded team-mates without being obviously outclassed. He's also raced through serious injury, returning from a bad cycling accident in remarkably short order, which earned him genuine respect even from some of his harsher critics.

He remains at Aston Martin today, racing alongside Fernando Alonso as the team continues its long-term push toward genuine championship contention, still driving under the weight of a storyline he never fully gets to escape, and still quietly banking the kind of consistent results that a team backed by his own family would obviously want regardless of who was driving for them.
