Valtteri Bottas

Valtteri Bottas built his Formula 1 career on being ready the moment somebody else's chair became available, and it's worked out for him more than once. Growing up in Nastola, Finland — a country with a small population but an outsized F1 pedigree — Bottas came up through karting and junior formulae showing the kind of smooth, technically composed driving style that Finnish drivers have long been known for, before earning a Formula 1 seat with Williams in 2013 after serving as the team's test and reserve driver.

His genuinely defining career moment arrived at the end of 2016, when Nico Rosberg won the World Championship and then, astonishingly, retired from the sport almost immediately afterward, leaving arguably the best seat in Formula 1 empty at Mercedes with barely any warning. Bottas was the driver Mercedes turned to, and he spent the following five seasons as Lewis Hamilton's team-mate during the most dominant stretch in the team's history — a role that came with genuine race wins and podiums, but also the unavoidable shadow of being paired with one of the greatest drivers of all time during his absolute prime.

Bottas handled that role with a professionalism that's arguably underappreciated. He won ten Grands Prix during his Mercedes years and took a significant number of pole positions, genuinely contributing to Mercedes's constructors' championship dominance rather than simply making up the numbers, even as the team's clear priority in title fights remained with Hamilton. It's a difficult balance for any driver to strike — competitive enough to help the team, disciplined enough not to disrupt the number one driver's title bid — and Bottas managed it for longer than almost anyone else could have.

When Mercedes eventually moved on from him at the end of 2021, Bottas relocated to Sauber, embracing a very different role: from supporting a championship campaign to becoming the senior, experienced anchor of a midfield team working through its own long-term transformation project. He brought calm, consistent feedback and the kind of laid-back personality that made him a paddock favourite, known as much for his interests outside racing — photography, endurance sport, an unusually relaxed public persona for a Formula 1 driver — as for his on-track results during that period.

His next chapter arrives with Cadillac, the sport's newest constructor, bringing over a decade of Formula 1 experience, five wins-worth of race-winning knowhow, and genuine championship-team pedigree to a brand-new project starting from absolute zero. For a new team needing a driver who already knows what a winning operation looks like from the inside, Bottas is about as valuable a hire as the current grid could offer — proof that a career built on being ready when opportunity knocked has plenty more twists left in it yet.
