Esteban Ocon's Formula 1 career has been shaped as much by the moments he wasn't racing as the ones he was, which makes his current run at Haas feel more hard-earned than most. Born in Normandy, France, and raised largely around Mercedes's junior driver system, Ocon came up through karting and single-seaters with a technically clean, aggressive style that earned him backing from one of the sport's most successful teams before he'd even reached Formula 1.

He made his debut with Manor in 2016, a struggling backmarker team, before moving to Force India where he began delivering the kind of consistent, feisty results that suggested a bigger future. That future briefly collided head-on, literally, with his own team-mate: a notorious on-track collision with Max Verstappen at the 2018 Austrian Grand Prix, while the two were lapping each other, became one of the most talked-about controversies of that season and did neither driver's short-term reputation any favours.

Worse was to come. At the end of 2018, with the driver market unusually crowded, Ocon found himself without a race seat entirely for 2019, despite having been a genuinely competitive Formula 1 driver only months earlier — one of the more brutal reminders of how ruthless the sport's driver market can be even for talented, proven drivers. He spent that season as Mercedes's reserve driver, doing the unglamorous simulator and support work rather than racing, before Renault brought him back onto the grid in 2020.

The comeback paid off quickly. Racing for what became Alpine, Ocon delivered his maiden Grand Prix win at the rain-affected 2021 Hungarian Grand Prix, a smart, disciplined drive that vindicated everyone who'd argued his year on the sidelines had been a market failure rather than a talent one. He remained at Alpine for several seasons afterward, a consistent points-scorer and occasional podium finisher for a team that fluctuated between competitive and difficult, before a move to Haas for 2025 gave him a fresh project and a new team to help build.

What's defined Ocon throughout has been a refusal to disappear quietly whenever the sport has tried to push him toward the exit — dropped from a seat entirely in 2019, involved in one of the more toxic team-mate rivalries of the late 2010s, he's answered both with results rather than complaints. He races with a visible determination that comes across as slightly combative to some observers and admirably relentless to others, but either way it's kept him on the grid, still winning points and the occasional big result, well over a decade after his own career very nearly stalled for good.
