About Yas Marina Circuit

Yas Marina opened in 2009 and has closed the Formula 1 season more often than any other circuit. Its defining feature is the light: the race starts in daylight and finishes under floodlights, with the transition through dusk changing track temperature and grip during the opening stint.

The original layout was widely criticised for producing processional races, and it was substantially reprofiled for 2021. The turn five hairpin was opened into a banked corner, the slow turn eleven to fourteen section under the hotel was replaced with a single long left, and the final sequence was widened. The result cut lap time significantly and made side-by-side running possible where it previously was not.

The circuit also has one of the sport's most unusual pit exits, running through a tunnel underneath the track. Yas Marina has settled the drivers' championship on several occasions, most contentiously in 2021.

Notable facts

  • Starts in daylight and finishes under floodlights, with the dusk transition changing grip through the opening stint.
  • The pit lane exit runs through a tunnel beneath the circuit.
  • Substantially reprofiled for 2021 to remove the slow hotel section and open out the hairpin.
  • Has hosted the season finale in the majority of years since it joined the calendar in 2009.
