About Hungaroring

The Hungaroring opened in 1986 as the first Formula 1 race held behind the Iron Curtain, and it has appeared on every calendar since. Built in a natural bowl outside Budapest, it offers spectators a view of most of the lap and drivers almost no opportunity to pass.

The circuit is often described as Monaco without the walls: 4.381 km of short straights and linked medium-speed corners, run at maximum downforce, with only the run down to turn one offering a realistic overtake. Because the surface is dusty and rarely used, grip off the racing line is poor, which discourages drivers from committing to moves and makes strategy and qualifying position decisive.

Heat compounds the difficulty. The Hungarian Grand Prix falls in late July or August, and the combination of high ambient temperature, low average speed and constant steering input makes it one of the most physically demanding races of the season for both driver and cooling package.

Notable facts

  • The first Formula 1 World Championship race held behind the Iron Curtain, in 1986.
  • Lewis Hamilton has won here eight times, more than at any other circuit.
  • Jenson Button's 2006 win came from 14th on the grid — the joint-lowest starting position for a Hungarian Grand Prix winner.
  • Nigel Mansell's 1989 victory came from 12th on the grid, the only time a driver has won here from outside the top ten in the 1980s.
