With the second half of the season commencing this weekend in Zandvoort, rumours in the driver market have intensified. The latest from the rumour mill is that Carlos Sainz Jr., who is one of the most valuable drivers on the market for the 2027 season is close to signing a contract extension with Williams Racing.

When Sainz first signed with Williams in 2025, the relationship started off well with Sainz scoring a podium in Baku and a top 3 finish during the sprint race in Austin. But this year has been a whole different story for the Spaniard. Right from the start of the season, Williams failed to deliver a competitive car under the new regulations. During the Hungarian GP, the car fell behind the pace of the Aston Martin as well, causing concern within the team. This may have put doubts in Carlos Sainz's mind regarding a contract extension.

Williams offer Carlos Sainz major salary bump

↗︎According to the latest rumours, Williams have offered Carlos a major salary increase compared to his previous contract. which has him close to signing the deal. However, a final decision is yet to come from the Spaniard. There is still a lot of concern regarding the team's ability to develop the car.

While financial incentive is a motivation to extend his contract, Sainz also wants to win races. He will need to consider if re-signing with Williams is the best option for his career right now. At 29 years old, Sainz is at the peak of his career. He can't afford to waste too much time trying to build a team up. If he feels that Williams cannot give him a competitive car in the next 2 years, there's a good chance he looks elsewhere for a seat.

During the 90s, Williams used to be one of the top teams in the sport. We saw legendary drivers such as Nigel Mansell, Alain Prost, Damon Hill and Jacques Villeneuve win Championships from inside the cockpit of a Williams car. The question is whether they climb back up from this pit they've dug themselves into.

What are Carlos Sainz's other options?

As it stands, none of the top 4 teams are planning to switch up their driver lineup. Hence, Sainz will have to settle for a midfield team. Apart from Williams, there have been signs of interest from teams like Audi, Aston Martin and Alpine. Aston Martin are waiting on a decision from Fernando Alonso. If Alonso decides to retire after the current season, the team want Carlos Sainz to drive alongside Lance Stroll.

We know that Carlos Sainz Jr.'s father has a strong relationship with the people at Audi Motorsport. However, it seems as though Audi is leaning towards keeping their current drivers for next year. With Alpine, the team will be evaluating Franco Colapinto's performance during the second half of the season. If things go well for the Argentine driver, he will most likely be retained. Considering these options, it may be in Carlos Sainz's best interest to retain his seat with Williams for next year.
