About Marina Bay Street Circuit
Singapore staged the first night race in Formula 1 history in 2008, run under nearly 1,600 floodlights on public roads around Marina Bay. It is routinely described as the most physically demanding race of the year: humidity close to 80%, ambient temperatures that barely fall after dark, and a lap with no straight long enough to rest.
The circuit is a genuine street course — concrete walls, painted road markings, manhole covers and bumps that no permanent facility would tolerate. Because the walls are close and the lap is long, safety cars are more likely here than anywhere else on the calendar, and races have repeatedly run close to the two-hour time limit.
The layout was changed for 2023, when the tight turns sixteen to nineteen sequence beside the Bay Grandstand was replaced by a long straight. That cut around twenty seconds from the lap and, for the first time, gave the circuit a second genuine overtaking zone.
